'You don't hate country' playlist new additions!
Plus a fun album release party from an artist you don't know that you know
I started this brand a little over a year ago, with the intention to highlight the more traditional ‘left of center’ artists who are still keeping an element (and the culture) of more classic country alive.
While many people think that means I hate mainstream country (well, I kinda do), ok I don’t hate ALL of it. Nor do I hate the artists. They’re doing them in an attempt to be famous, find longevity in a genre, and do what they love for a living. Can’t hate that.
I believe those two sides of country can coexist, as long as the true country artists don’t get alienated, and people realize that what’s popular today is just that, popular (pop) country.
But because of the pop country sound, many older country fans have turned their backs on the genre, siting that they ‘hate’ country music now. Well, I don’t know that you do - you just hate what radio plays. That doesn’t mean you hate the genre in its entirety.
That’s where this playlist came from. It highlights some of my most favorite songs and artists over that time, and while it’s getting pretty long now, I keep adding to it from time to time.
I thought this concept and idea was new and creative, then I found out that actually a lot of country creators in this space have similar titled playlists - that’s okay, the more people spreading it the better!
But this week, I just wanted to highlight a few new additions to the list if you needed some new material.
Drive and Cry - Emily Nenni
Use Me - Zach Top
Wish You Well - Sierra Ferrell
Lady Luck - Kade Hoffman
Borned In Ya - Melissa Carper
10x10 - Pony Bradshaw
Little Songs - Colter Wall
Chewing on Fire - Drayton Farley
A Fun Album Release from An Artist You Don’t Know That You Know
One of my most favorite things about Nashville is seeing and hearing artists play that I don’t necessarily recognize the name of as a performer, but end up finding out that they have quite the extensive list of accolades, as song writers.
Many songwriters are overlooked. The geniuses behind some of your most beloved hits. If they passed you on the street you wouldn’t know them. But they’re the makers behind the madness. The creators behind the masterpiece.
And after being invited to an album release for George Ducas (his first in 5 years), I realized again how true that was.
Last Friday night he played his album party at Chiefs on Broadway, mixing some popular covers with singles from his new album.
He also threw in some songs that I ended up recognizing (because they’re some of my favorites) that he was awriter on but not the master recorder.
Songs like:
B-EE-RR-U-N (B double E double R UN..Beer Run) gosh that’s easier said than typed. Made popular by George Jones and Garth Brooks, written in part by George Ducas.
Real Fine Place to Start made popular by Sarah Evans, written by George Ducas.
Kiss Me In The Dark, made popular by Randy Rogers Band, written by George Ducas.
The list goes on.
It just reminded me one of the reasons why I moved to Nashville (and loved it) in the first place.
Til next week,
Nikki
