On Friday, September 3rd 2024, The King of Country George Strait released his 31st studio album, Cowboys and Dreamers. Itâs his first in 5 years since Honky Tonk Time Machine came out in 2019.
This year was hard for George as he lost many people close to him in a very short time span. His longtime fiddle player Gene elders AND his manager for almost his entire career, the famous Erv Woolsey both passed on the same day earlier this year. Then he also lost his friend and road manager Tom Foote in April. He mentioned in an interview this album was dedicated to them.
Upon first listen it felt like classic Strait, opening with âThree Drinks Behindâ a âKenny Chesney-esqueâ jammer with an island feel. Right in the middle we are graced with a duet with Chris Stapleton, âHonky Tonk Hall of Fameâ. And most notably, Straitâs cover of Waylon Jenningsâ âWaymoreâs Bluesâ near the end. Heâs one of the only artists alive who could do that song justice.
As we all know, recently the King announced he was stepping back from heavily touring, only doing large stadium shows every now and then which seems to hold true as the only performance he has on his docket for the remainder of the year is December 7th at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas.
Who knows, maybe heâll add some more surprise shows to support this latest release. Let me know what you guys thought about âCowboys and Dreamersâ!
